13 Minutes is about Georg Elser and his failed attempt to assassinate Hitler. Only 13 minutes separated carpenter Georg Elser from changing the history forever. On 8 November, 1939, Elser planted a bomb behind Hitler's stand in a Munich pub. However, Hitler left the room 13 minutes earlier than planned, so he lived. Oliver Hirschbiegel, who has already staged the last days of the Nazi regime in the award-winning film Downfall, casts light on the story behind Elser's act. Recreating the social and political context of the day, Hirschbiegel analyzes the relationship between Elser and Arthur Nebe, the chief detective in charge of disclosing the members of the conspiracy. While in prison, Elser remembers the events that lead to the assassination attempt, and his reasons for the drastic action.

Oliver Hirschbiegel was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1957. He made his TV directing debut with Das Go! Projekt and his cinema debut with Das Experiment, which won four German Film Awards. In 2005, Downfall was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. After a number of US productions, including the royal biopic Diana, 13 Minutes marks his first German feature film in nine years.
