Ghastly, brutal and poetically beautiful, Kurzel's Macbeth is a very modern – but true to the original – cinematic interpretation of Shakespeare's timeless tragedy about class conflicts, passions and insatiable hunger for power. Exhausted but triumphant, King Duncan's cousin Macbeth returns to his wife from a battle. On his way home, three witches predict he will manage to seize the crown. Blinded by ambition, Lady Macbeth encourages him not to waste time and claim the promised throne. The performance of Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard blends the dehumanized and human traits of the husband and wife driven to madness by their own greed and unbearable feeling of guilt. Adam Arkapaw's camera turns the bloody scenes of traumatic violence into a dreamlike visions verging on transcendentality.

Justin Kurzel was born in 1974, Australia. His background as an esteemed theatre production designer informs his strong visual storytelling as a director. He is best known as the director of the crime drama Snowtown, for which he won the AACTA Award for Best Direction. Macbeth is his second feature film. It premiered in Cannes to raving reviews.
