On his was home from Tajikistan, professor of anthropology Paul Dédalus, superbly played by Mathieu Amalric, remembers crucial moments from his past: his childhood in Roubaix, his mother's madness and father's alienation and depression. He also remembers his exciting trip to the USSR. But most importantly, he remembers his love affair with dazzling and naughty Esther. Paul's six-year relationship with Esther smoothly binds together the film's fragmented narrative structure. The unhappy childhood, amateur espionage and the agony of the first love harmoniously blend into a story about growing up. Although My Golden Days is a prequel of a sort to the acclaimed Desplechin's 1996 film My Sex Life, it can be watched independently. Evidence to it is the SACD Award for Best Script won in Cannes.

Arnaud Desplechin was born in 1960, Roubaix, France. His first feature The Sentinel premiered at Cannes. His next film My Sex Life revealed a whole new generation of actors – notably Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Devos. He is known for his rapport with actors, who regularly receive top awards. Five of his films have been in official competition at Cannes. He is best known for A Christmas Tale, Kings & Queen and Jimmy P.
