Val is a perfect nanny and a domestic help that any employer could only dream of. Taking her job very seriously, always in a crisp uniform, she makes perfect finger snacks and carries out all her duties with dedication, lovingly bringing up her employers' son Fabinho in the process. But not everything in Val's life is fabulous. Although financially sound, she is ridden with guilt because 13 years ago she gave her daughter Jessica to her relations to take care of her so that she – Val – could dedicate herself to work. Things change when young and ambitious Jessica comes to Sao Paolo to pass her university admissions tests. Her enthusiasm and self-confidence shake up the tacit but firm social order in the household. Tension is growing and Val must decide where her true loyalty lies and what she is willing to sacrifice. Using dark humor and tangible characters, Anna Muylaert builds an intense drama about the clash of old principles and new worlds.
Anna Muylaert was born in 1964. She has directed six short films before directing her first feature film, Durval Discos (2002). Her second film É Proibido Fumar won eight awards at Festival de Brasília. The Second Mother is her fourth film. It won the Special Jury Award for Acting at Sundance, as well as the Audience Award at the 2015 Berlinale.
