A beautiful film about a not so beautiful subject. It is a story about growing up, focused on 16-year-old Ari. After his mother moves to Angola with her new husband, Ari is forced to leave Reykjavik and move to his father's house in Wesfjord, the least populated and coldest part of Iceland. A place with more waterfalls then people, they say. Against the astonishing backdrop of the rugged countryside, Ari gets to know the hardships of the adult life, but also its tempting vices, human cruelty and love. Not knowing how to bond with his father, who is an alcoholic, Ari finds warmth in his grandmother and his friend Lana. Penetrating deep into human psyche and emotions, the film focuses on human imperfections, complexities of growing up and man's constant quest for a shelter and peace of mind.

Rúnar Rúnarsson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1977. Graduated from the Danish Film School in 2009. He has directed short films The Last Farm, Anna and 2 Birds, which was screened at the 6th Zagreb Film Festival. His debut feature Volcano was screened at the 10th Zagreb Film Festival. Sparrows is his second feature film.
