In order to afford the short film format the attention it deserves, the 13th Zagreb Film Festival is this year moving short international films out of Europa Cinema and screening them at Tuškanac, together with Checkers, in as many as six 8.30pm slots, from Sunday, 16 to Friday, 22 November.
The competition thus includes ten films in the Checkers category, the most important local platform for the promotion of up-and-coming filmmakers, who have not yet made a feature film, and ten international short films. Although the same international jury will pick and choose the best film, the awards will be presented for each category separately.
A novelty in the festival’s short program coincided with the Checkers’ anniversary, this year celebrating its 10th birthday.
13th Zagreb Film Festival on Good Old Locations
We are continuing our collaboration with important cultural institutions in Zagreb and distributing the program to six well-known locations – Europa and Tuškanac cinemas, Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb Dance Centre and Academy of Dramatic Art.
Europa Cinema is the legendary cinema in Zagreb and a protected heritage site of the Republic of Croatia. This year it is celebrating an important anniversary – it was opened exactly 90 years ago! Throughout the eight eventful decades of our central cinema’s life, names of nearby streets have changed, as well as political and economic regimes, but the building kept its original use – film lovers, devotees and passers-by come here to relax, escape reality, enjoy themselves and see a good film.
All of Zagreb’s film lovers and connoisseurs are well acquainted with the significance of Tuškanac cinema and its film programs that adamantly persist the general commercialisation of everything, including film culture.
Zagreb Dance Centre boasts the status of the first venue built exclusively for dance purposes in Croatia. Throughout the entire year the Centre’s organises a wide array of dance events. Aside from dance shows, dance film screenings, Q&A’s with dance artists, the Centre is also a place where people can take active part in different dance training activities.
